What do Career Counsellors do?
Career Counsellors can help in making career decisions for people of all ages. They are able to access relevant training and job information as well as asking questions about interests, lifestyle, commitments and aspirations. By looking at all of these aspects, people are better placed to make decisions regarding their future. One thing to remember is that decisions can not be made overnight. It takes time to gather and sort through all information.

Who are the people that go to Career Counsellors for help?
Everyone - whether you are a school leaver, a mother returning to the workforce, unemployed, or just wanting to change careers. A Career Counsellor will be able to help focus on what is important, where you want to go and steps to get there. They may point out positive aspects as well as potential difficulties given health, family or financial concerns. This is to ensure that when making a decision all factors have been considered.

Can you tell me what career I should do?
The short answer to this is No. However, Career Counsellors can assist with information, checking of interests, preferred work environments and costs involved. These costs are not necessarily financial – it may mean a shift to another town or lifestyle change. For example, rostered or evening hours must be considered in terms of health concerns or sporting commitments

Do you have a test that will tell what I'm good at/ what I should do?
Again the answer to this is No. Yes there are tests that may indicate career areas that may be appropriate. It may give some direction with choices but each of these will need to be explored further. Like everything, there is no guarantee that it is the answer.

Any advice?
Yes. Learning is lifelong and it pays to always look at building on your skill base and experiences. Think back ten years - the Internet was just an idea, now it is an everyday tool for school, education and business. Who knows what the future holds? Keep up to date with what is happening and make sure that you learn these skills.
